今朝、スズメを見た。また小さくなっていた。３０数年前、僕が小学生のころは、スズメは今の３倍の大きさだった。１０年ごとに１まわりずつ小さくなっているのだ。どうしてそんなことが起きるのか不思議だが、もっと不思議なのは、誰もそのことに気づいていないことだ。


　世の人のスズメに対する無関心には、背筋が寒くなる。


　かく言う僕も、帰国するまで気づかなかった。２０代のころ、一時的に日本を離れ、スズメのいない国で生活していたから、気づけたのだ。当初は、目の錯覚 だと思った。錯覚だと思いたかった。が違った。注意して観察していると、少しずつだが、確実に、小さくなっていくのがわかる‥‥
